General Liability Insurance
for California Businesses.

Every customer visit, job site, and completed project brings different risks. Start a conversation with CPIS about liability coverage for the way your business operates.

Understand the basics

Protection when a third-party claim affects your business.

Commercial general liability insurance can help address covered claims involving injury to someone outside your business or damage to their property. Depending on the policy, it may also respond to certain personal and advertising injury claims.

Coverage starts with the policy details.

Covered claims may include defense costs and damages, subject to policy terms. Limits, exclusions, and endorsements matter when reviewing an option.

A customer visits your premises.

What would happen if a visitor alleged that an unsafe condition caused an injury?

Your work takes you off-site.

Could your activities accidentally damage someone else’s property?

A product or project is completed.

Could an injury or property damage claim arise after a sale or finished job?

Different businesses. Different exposures.

What does a typical workday look like?

These details help frame your inquiry. Availability and eligibility depend on your operations and insurer underwriting.

Work at customer locations, subcontractor arrangements, and project insurance requirements.

Customer foot traffic, leased premises, and the products you sell.

What you make, import, distribute, or sell—and how those products are used.

Common coverage areas

What can general liability insurance help cover?

A policy may include the following protections. An example on this page does not establish coverage for a particular claim.

Third-party bodily injury

Covered claims alleging that your premises or operations caused physical injury to a customer or another third party.

Third-party property damage

Covered liability claims for accidental damage to someone else’s property arising from your business activities.

Personal & advertising injury

Certain covered offenses, such as libel, slander, or specified advertising-related infringement.

Products & completed operations

Covered bodily injury or property damage claims connected to your products or completed work, subject to applicable exclusions.

General liability does not replace workers’ compensation, commercial auto, commercial property, or professional liability insurance. Ask about separate coverage for those exposures.

Questions business owners ask

General liability insurance FAQs.

How much does general liability insurance cost?

Pricing depends on factors such as your business activities, size, claims history, coverage limits, and insurer. Some policies use sales, payroll, or other exposure measures. Request a quote based on your business rather than relying on a general price estimate.

Can a client or landlord require this coverage?

Yes. Contracts or leases may require liability insurance and specify limits or endorsements. Send CPIS the actual insurance requirements so they can be discussed alongside the proposed policy.

Is a certificate of insurance the same as additional insured status?

No. A certificate summarizes insurance information; it does not itself change the policy or grant coverage. Additional insured status depends on the policy and applicable endorsements. Share the request and contract before assuming a certificate satisfies every requirement.

Does general liability cover employee injuries or business vehicles?

These exposures generally need different policies. Visit our Workers’ Compensation and Commercial Auto pages to learn about those coverages.

Can general liability be included in a business owner’s policy?

A business owner’s policy, often called a BOP, can combine general liability with commercial property coverage for eligible businesses. Eligibility, included protections, and optional endorsements vary by insurer and policy.

Does submitting the form activate insurance?

No. The form starts an inquiry. Coverage is effective only when it has been arranged and confirmed under the applicable policy terms. Tell CPIS if you have a deadline or need coverage for an upcoming project.
